PIETRASANTA
Pietrasanta is a small town in the northern Tuscany at the foothills of the Apuan Alps, 4 kilometres from the Mediterranean Sea and close to world famous Firenze, Lucca and Pisa. The town has a long standing tradition as an art colony and boasts a cultural scene which has become increasingly popular among tourists in the last decade. Ever since Italian sculptor Michelangelo Buonarroti first came to Pietrasanta in 1516 for the world’s purest marble, the town and its artists have been connected in a unique working community. Several other artists followed Michelangelo, not just hunting for marble, but to practice crafts like bronze casting, mosaic, stucco, wood carving, and graphic printing. All these forms of expression require a workshop and it is essential for artists to be surrounded by craftsmen who can help manifest their vision. Within the city walls of Pietrasanta all these art forms come together in a flourishing art community. The workshops have ample international scope and many monuments around the world are created in Pietrasanta.
The fascinating medieval city of Pietrasanta is considered the historic capital of Versilia and the capital of marble processing and production of artworks.
Attracting artists from all over the world, in recent decades the city has turned into a veritable open-air museum where you can admire among the many
galleries and squares of the town, a constant and continuously renewed display of contemporary sculpture.
